Plastic surgeons recommend replacing breast implants with new ones after 10 to 15 years. The primary reason is the prevention of complete wear and tear of the implant and its subsequent rupture. The reasons for replacing them can vary, from medical to an aesthetic nature.
Course of the operation
When replacing implants, the operation is nearly identical to that used for breast enlargement. The incision is made along the original scar; in some cases it is necessary to proceed to shaping the breast, where the excess tissue is removed and the remaining breast tissue is shaped. The original implant is removed along with the capsule formed around it and the new implant is inserted.
Implants can be replaced with larger ones or smaller ones; the woman must discuss this with her surgeon before the procedure. If the original breast implants are replaced with smaller ones, the plastic surgeon usually must also proceed with shaping the breast (mammaplasty).
Post-operative course
You will feel pain in your breasts for a few days after the operation. Have no fear: this is the body’s natural reaction to an intervention into the human organism and the insertion of a foreign body. The greatest pain occurs when the implant is inserted beneath a muscle. For managing the pain, you’ll take painkillers for 2-5 days after the operation, and the pain will gradually subside. Remember that convalescence is an individual process that depends on an individual’s own ability to heal.
